Snap pack is Carlsberg’s innovative solution in the reduction of plastic use

Resorting to an innovative gluing technology, Carlsberg’s Snap Pack eliminates the need for plastic packaging on their packs.

Snap Pack, launched by Carlsberg, is the brand’s most recent innovation in the search for a more sustainable beer. This new technology allows for the joining of the beer cans using a point of glue, eliminating the plastic packaging which these packs are typically wrapped in. This way, Carlsberg is able to significantly reduce the quantity of plastic waste used in its packaging.

By eliminating the need for the single use plastic packaging, Snap Pack reduces plastic use by about 76%, when compared to former packaging. In addition, as soon as all Carlsberg packs are converted into Snap Packs, it will mean 1200 tons less plastic packaging annually worldwide.

With the introduction of this new technology, Carlsberg reduces the risk of pollutant waste, carbon dioxide emissions and the dependency on packaging based on fossil fuels.

For the launching of this innovative solution, Carlsberg recreated the famous statue of the Little Mermaid, in Copenhagen, using only plastic and the new Snap Pack glue. At three metres tall, this recreation is composed of 137 kgs of plastic, the same amount of plastic that Carlsberg will reduce the use of per hour thanks to the Snap Pack (which corresponds to 1200 tons a year). The original statue has a strong connection with Carlsberg as it was ordered by Carl Jacobsen, son of the company’s founder.
